How To Get Rid Of Skunk Odor, Skunk Spray and Skunk Smell

Here is a proven formula to help get rid of skunk spray smell.

  • 1 qt hydrogen peroxide
  • Equal parts warm water
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 Tbsp liquid dish soap

Mix all ingredients into a large mixing bowl, do not cover.

Once mixed, using a wash cloth or sponge, apply the mixture immediately onto your pet (we use this same mixture to remove the smell on our technicians as well). Use caution around the eyes and mouth.

Once you have applied to mixture, scrub it into a lather and then let it sit for 10 minutes, then rinse. Repeat if necessary

How To Remove A Skunk Without Getting Sprayed

1. You will want something to cover the trap which will also help you protect yourself from getting sprayed directly if the skunk does spray.

2. It is best if you can keep them facing you, if they start aiming their back end towards you, it’s going to be a bad day for you and everyone in your family, and anywhere you have to go for days to come!  It doesn’t just smell when they spray you. That smell lingers in the car, the house, on your clothes on the furniture, and in your house.

3. You want to walk towards the trap with whatever you are using to cover the trap in front of you.

4. If the door on your trap is a solid door, it is best to use that as a secondary barrier to protect you from getting sprayed.

5. Place the cover over the trap.

6. With gloves on, grab the handle on the trap to transport the skunk to your approved relocation site.

7. To release the skunk, straddle the trap and bend down towards the door so the skunk can run/walk away from you when the door opens.

8. Raise the door and if your trap doesn’t have a locking mechanism to hold the door open, you will have to hold it open or prop the door open with a stick or something similar.

9. Once the skunk exits the trap, do not make any sudden movements until it is out of spraying range (at least 15 ft).

Skunks are the highest carrier for rabies in the state of Oklahoma. It is best to contact a licensed and insured company like us to handle skunk removal, but if you are willing to take the risk of getting sprayed or bitten, when you release the skunk from a trap, here is some helpful information to get this done.

If your pet has been exposed to a skunk. Contact your vet immediately, if you need to test the skunk for rabies, your vet will know what to do.

If the skunk needs to be euthanized for rabies testing, do not shoot it in the head.
